i’m spilling the beans.

Last month I hosted my first coffee meetup for Business Women’s Network of Howard County. At the event, I asked everyone to submit their burning organizing questions. Below you will find my answers to those questions.

How do clean/out organize kid things after they have moved out of the house?

If they have already moved out of the home, then their items ought to be with them. To make the process as seamless as possible, I recommend packing up their items into boxes. Then arrange a date/ time for them to pick up the boxes. If a date and time can not be arranged, be clear with them about next steps.

How to organize handbags and wallets?

I prefer to use the bag-in-bag method for handbags. What is the bag-in-bag method? The bag-in-bag method is a technique where you store a smaller bag within a larger bag. Think Russian nesting dolls but with handbags.

As far as wallets. I love using acrylic dividers for wallets. This purse organizer by MDesign is one of my favorites!

How do I utilize space in a small closet? Should I use portable drawers?

When dealing with a small space you want to make the most of the vertical space. This can be as easy as trying a new space plan or it may require that you add storage to the closet. (Shelf, Cube Storage, Portable Drawers, etc.)

Before you add/purchase products for your home, you want to ask yourself a few questions:

  1. What do I intend to store in the closet?

  2. Will this new product maximize or minimize the space I already have?

  3. Does this product solve a problem?

I’m struggling with having things fit in spaces in the closet. What should I do?

If items are spilling out of your closet, it may be a good indication that it is time to declutter. However, it could also mean that the place you are trying to store the item is not the best location for it.

Do you have any ideas for organizing holidays (all holidays) decorations but also staying minimal?

There are so many ways to organize holiday décor. In my opinion, the best way to organize holiday decorations is by the holiday. So, begin by sorting all your décor by the holiday. From there decide on where they are going to be stored. (Basement, Attic, Garage, etc.) Next measure that area and use that to guide what you use to store the decorations. These totes by The Container Store are my favorite because they are transparent, weathertight, and stackable.

As far as keeping things minimal, my best advice is to find ways to use the décor for more than one holiday. For an example you could purchase red pillows and use them for both Christmas and Valentine’s. Another way to keep your holiday décor minimal is to opt to use smaller accent pieces as opposed to large statement pieces.

When going through clothes, how do I know what to keep and what to let go of?

Making a choice on what to keep in your wardrobe can be challenging but it doesn't have to be. I would start by picking an article of clothing that you love. Think about how it makes you feel by seeing it? How does it make you feel when you wear it?

Hang that item up in plain sight and use it to identify whether or not you desire to keep it.

What is the best way to organize your office?

The best way to organize your office is all about you. Your office ought to be organized in a way that promotes productivity and supports your needs. A few questions to ask yourself:

  1. Are you using this item?

  2. Do you anticipate that you will use it in the near future?

  3. Is this the most ideal location for this item?
